SO HOW ABOUT AN ASTEROID? (Poem)

(Dedicated to Charles “Chuck” Doe)

So how about an asteroid?
Say one that rotates in the void
With orbit crossing ‘twixt Earth and Sun
Swinging endlessly since time begun.
Comets long dead; their burst of glory gone.
Among our studies, don’t they belong?

Or maybe one that stays as it should
Between Mars and Jupiter. That would be good!
And those that swing in orbits true,
Might they be dead comets too?
What might be found in one of those
Where a major planet Bode’s Law shows.

Or maybe one of those that swings
“‘Tween Mars and Earth. They’re the things.
Is that from whence the Little Prince* came?
He who knew his mind, yet, was too tame?
Could anyone possibly be annoyed
About the study of an asteroid?
